Neurological Physiotherapy

About Neurological Physiotherapy

Neurological physiotherapy can be a complex and challenging process that includes many areas of a patient’s life, which will include multiple neurological therapy services.  Often occupational therapy and speech and language therapy in addition to physiotherapy are also needed and in some cases psychological support.

Initial focus will be on a neurological exam to assess the level of treatment required before a programme of treatment can be designed around your needs. The neurological services required by a patient could be as a result of a head injury, nerve injury, a developmental concern or as a consequence of age. By addressing the issues with comprehensive neurological services it is possible to aid recovery, improve development or slow degenerative conditions.

The role of neurological physiotherapy (neurological rehabilitation)
After conducting the initial physiotherapy neurological assessment, the role of the therapist is to ascertain the patient’s specific needs and design a neurological rehabilitation programme around these requirements.

This may involve liaising with and utilising a number of other services, including care homes, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy.

The therapist will often devise an extensive neurological physiotherapy exercises programme for the patient to perform on a regular basis. This aims to train the neurological system to function in a more effective way, improving quality of life for the patient. It can be a challenging process but real progress can be made.

Types of neurological therapy
Neurological physiotherapy is a large area of treatment that involves many different aspects. The rehabilitation process depends on the individual so there are various approaches that can be used. There are some direct treatments as well as education and training for the patient and any carers involved. Equipment is sometimes needed and this can be used during treatment or ordered specifically for the patient.

It can be used to address issues with:

  • Movement disorders
  • Changes in tone – spasticity, low tone, paralysis
  • Posture
  • Vestibular system
  • Pain
  • Weakness
  • Problems with activities of daily living like dressing, cooking, bathing
